The Truth About Bigfoot Search
The quest to find creatures unknown to science is a fascinating one. The Loch Ness Monster and giant serpents in the sea has occupied many minds. The most popular animal in folklore is the Bigfoot, otherwise known as the Sasquatch. The Bigfoot search has centered on the sightings in the Pacific North West of America and British Columbia, Canada. This animal, resembling an ape, is said by eyewitness reports to stand between seven and nine feet tall and is said to live in forests in secluded areas. Some people think that the Yeti, another creature of folklore, seen in the Himalayan region is the same species as the Bigfoot.
Most of the early reports stem from the 1860s, going into the 20th century. In 1924, someone even claimed that he had been kidnapped by a whole family of Bigfoot. There have been eyewitness accounts, film footage, photographs and physical evidence such as footprints, allegedly found in California in 1958. The skeptical scientific community claims that the Bigfoot search is a waste of time and that anecdotal evidence doesn't make up for the few examples of physical evidence.
One of the most popular images to come out of the Bigfoot search is the short film that came to be known as the Patterson Gimlin Film. Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin claim to have shot film of the Bigfoot, walking through a clearing in Bluff Creek, California in 1967. This was convincing footage for some people but others accuse them of producing an elaborate hoax. There are people who have admitted to conducting hoaxes and this has made all reports open to suspicion.
Scientists point out that there have not been any fossils found in North America to suggest the presence of large apes. They claim it is merely folklore and great apes would not live in the sort of habitat described. Whether it is true or not, it is fun to want to believe in it. Everyone would like to believe in the existence of a gentle giant.
The animal is famously shy and a Bigfoot search is difficult for that reason.
Hollywood however, has not been slow in making movies and TV shows based on the mythical animal. The movie and subsequent TV series, Harry and the Hendersons, told the story of a family who accidentally ran down a Bigfoot and took him home. Harry turns out to be really nice and he is accepted as a member of the family.
