Learn More About The Latest Technology

To be honest, if it weren't for my obsession with knowing the latest technology, I never would have gotten into science. You see, everything was against me in a science career. I have always had terrible trouble with math, and was not born a very analytical thinker. Nevertheless, my imagination drove me to it.

I have been reading about the latest technologies since I was a little kid, you see, and I have always known that I wanted to work with them. I remember browsing through my dad's Scientific American magazines, reading about quantum computing, space travel, And all sorts of other exciting current issues. I watched the latest advances in technology as if my life depended on them. Whether it was gadgets and gizmos, or cyclotrons and particle accelerators, my desire to understand the latest technology helped me to struggle through an advanced degree in mathematics.

I remember my disappointment when I found out that I couldn't study everything. I wanted to understand the latest technology, and by that I meant every new technology. I guess I was a pretty naive guy, but I thought that I could study genetics, particle physics, quantum mechanics, and chemistry all at the same time. When I found out that I would have to specialize in one thing or another, I almost had a breakdown.

Finally, I realized that if I wanted to stay on top of the latest technology, I would have to get into computer science. I had never tried to learn programming language before, But I started out right away. Learning computer programming is actually easy when you have a mathematical background. I think that studying math is better preparation for programming than studying computer science is!

Finally, I was left with several degrees and the realization that my whole academic career had been driven by my one desire to understand the latest technologies.  Now that I could, however, I didn't know what field I wanted to go into. For a while I stressed over it – I loved being able to read about the latest technology, but I had no idea what I wanted to spend my life working on. Then finally, I realized what I should do. I did what everyone who loves intellectual inquiry, but is short on practical goals does – I went back into the academy. There's no better place to keep abreast of the latest technology than at a public university with substantial research grants. It's a good life!
